OpenShift by Red Hat

See on Scoop.itCalling All Lecturers

Not only is open source PaaS applicable to distance learning and MOOCs, but the same model works in the physical classroom too. Traditional students don’t need to go to a computer lab or install virtual machines on their laptops if they can simply create a PaaS database in seconds and immediately get to work.

Karen Johnson‘s insight:

I think this could be of real interest to our business, IT and computing colleagues.  This looks like a fast and easy way to provide students with the experience of using and managing databases without the Uni having to have the hardware.

E-learning and Digital CulturesSian Bayne, Jeremy Knox, Hamish A. Macleod, Jen Ross and Christine Sinclair

Karen Johnson‘s insight:

My colleague Paul Williams pointed out this course to me.  I think it looks really interesting and would be a lot of fun to attend.  It’s a MOOC, I have no problem with that.  If a MOOC is done well it can be as good as any other good teaching.  What I object to is that when I try to Scoop this to tell you about it what I get is an advertisement for Coursera!  If you want to read about this great looking course the url is https://www.coursera.org/course/edc

Second Life: Transforming the Way UT Arlington Engages Online Students – Faculty eCommons

See on Scoop.itCalling All Lecturers

The College of Nursing at the University of Texas (UT) at Arlington is known for its innovative use of cutting edge technology, in both the classroom and clinical settings, to improve students’ experiences.  As an integral part of their technology initiatives, UT Arlington incorporates Second Life into their online Nursing courses. Although Second Life is not inherently an educational tool, UT Arlington has found the 3D virtual world to be an effective platform for mimicking real-life community and interaction.

Karen Johnson‘s insight:

For once an interview that asks appropriate questions about teaching in SL.  I’m sure lecturers will find the discussion here really helpful and interesting.  I’m certainly going to suggest this as a "goog read" for some of our lecturers who are using SL in their teaching.
